Pure pit-loom silk, never powerloom

At this band the silk must come off a pit loom — a wooden frame with a pedal pit dug into the ground. Pit-loom silk has a depth of colour and a hand that powerloom (mechanical) silk cannot replicate. The weaver's name is in the inside tag.

Real silver-gilt zari, 22-carat gold leaf

Genuine zari is silver wire wrapped around a silk core and coated in 22-carat gold leaf. It is heavier in hand, deeper in colour, and tarnishes if ignored for ten years. We test every roll. Anything under $5,000 with 'real zari' that does not tarnish is wrong.

Hand-woven pallu and border, korvai joined

The pallu, body, and border are woven on three separate looms and joined by hand using the traditional korvai technique. Cheaper sarees weave the whole length on one shuttle — the join lines are invisible but the silk movement is uniform and dull.

6.5 yards minimum, 800g+ weight

An heirloom saree should give you 6.3–6.9 metres of silk and weigh between 800g and 1.2kg. Lighter is shortcut; heavier is showing off. We weigh every piece before dispatch and the certificate is in the box.

Custom-stitched blouse, optional second blouse

Every heirloom saree includes one custom-stitched blouse. We can stitch a second blouse in a contrasting fabric for $180 — useful for re-styling the same saree across years.

Single-edition, with provenance certificate

Every piece in this band ships with a numbered certificate: weaver name, region, loom number, date of weave, raw materials. The certificate doubles as proof for insurance and resale, and the piece holds value in this segment.

If stored properly — flat, in muslin, away from light — yes. The silk darkens slightly over decades (this is desirable; it is called patina). The zari may need re-touching at the 20-year mark; we coordinate this with the original weaver where possible.
