A saree is six and a half yards of single cloth, pleated and draped on the day. A lehenga is a constructed three-piece set — choli, skirt, dupatta — stitched in advance. Both have bridal credibility in different traditions. The decision is rarely about taste; it is about which silhouette the wedding's photography, ritual, and family expectations demand. We make both and we have opinions about when each one wins.

Single six-and-a-half-yard length, pleated and draped on the day.
Unstitched length of fabric, typically 5.5–6.5 metres, worn over a petticoat with a fitted blouse. Drape varies by region — Nivi (modern), Bengali, Gujarati, Maharashtrian, South Indian. Re-wearability is the highest of any Indian garment — a saree fits across pregnancies, weight changes, generations. Photographs gravely. Walks gracefully.

Constructed skirt + choli + dupatta. Pre-stitched in advance.
Three-piece outfit: a flared floor-length skirt (often 16–24 kali panels), a fitted blouse, and a dupatta. Stitched to measurement before the event. The silhouette is dramatic and instantly photographable. Less re-wearable: the skirt is sized to one body, one waist. Photographs spectacularly. Walks deliberately.

Which to pick — Ketaki's verdict
Choose a saree if you want a piece that survives the decade — fits your sister, your mother, your daughter in fifteen years. Choose a lehenga if you want the most photographed bridal silhouette and you accept that the skirt is sized to your waist on the day. The honest answer for most brides: one of each. A saree for the muhurtam and a lehenga for the reception. If budget allows one only and the wedding is North Indian, lehenga. South Indian or Bengali, saree. If you have never draped a saree and are unsure on the day — we tell you to hire a drape artist; it is the difference between confidence and panic. Tell us the city and we'll recommend one.
