Buying guide · City · Melbourne · Guest dressing
Melbourne hosts the largest Indian wedding scene in Australia. Werribee Mansion, Vogue Ballroom, Manor on High — we have dressed guests and family members across every major venue. This guide is for the people who are NOT the bride: aunties, cousins, sisters, the groom's mother, friends, plus-ones. Melbourne's climate is the operative variable: 8°C and rain in June, 38°C in February, and unpredictable wind in spring. Choosing the right fabric for the right event is the single biggest decision you make. Below is what we tell guests asking what to wear to a Melbourne Indian wedding, sorted by event type and season. Most pieces are custom-stitched in 4–8 weeks.
What to look for
01
Summer (Dec–Feb): Chanderi silk-cotton, georgette, organza. Winter (Jun–Aug): raw silk, velvet, Banarasi brocade with a structured choli. Spring/autumn shoulders: silk-georgette mixes work both directions.
02
Yarra Valley vineyards run cold by sundown — even in summer. A cropped jacket or shawl-stole over a sleeveless choli is the trick. We design with a removable layer in mind.
03
Half of Melbourne's premium wedding venues have grass-lawn ceremonies. Block-heel juttis or flat embroidered slip-ons beat stilettos every time. We ship juttis as an add-on.
04
Melbourne mehendis tend to run in the afternoon, often outdoors in Werribee or Royal Park. Chikankari or Chanderi anarkalis breathe through six hours of sun. Avoid heavy velvet under 30°C.
05
Reception dance floors in Melbourne ballrooms are generous. A 16+ panel kali skirt gives you the spin photographs without the fabric stiffness of fewer panels.
06
A typical Melbourne Indian wedding is 6 events across 4 days. Plan one statement piece (reception or sangeet) and three lighter, re-wearable pieces (Chanderi saree, georgette anarkali, kurta set). Mix metals.

Common mistakes
Heavy velvet sherwani for an outdoor November wedding — you will overheat by the time the cocktails start. Save velvet for Yarra Valley winter weddings only.
Stilettos on grass. Every Melbourne wedding photographer has photos of a guest sinking into the lawn. Block heels or flat juttis are the right answer.
Dressing too close to bridal-red as a guest. Reserve red and gold combinations for the bride. Guest-side palettes lean jewel-tone, ivory, sage, oxblood.
Wearing the same outfit to mehendi and sangeet. They are different events with different photography requirements. Plan two pieces or one piece with two configurations.
Common questions
For statement guest pieces, place the order 8–10 weeks ahead. For lighter pieces and accessories, 4–6 weeks is comfortable. Order earlier if you want a bespoke colour we don't stock.
We don't have a permanent showroom in Melbourne, but we travel for atelier commissions four times a year. Email or WhatsApp before your visit and we'll align dates. Otherwise — video-call fittings.
Plan for 8–12°C and wind. We make raw-silk anarkalis with quilted lining as an option, and warm embroidered shawls that double as dupatta-replacements. Velvet bandhgalas are perfect for the men in this season.
We can introduce you to three Melbourne-based Indian wedding photographers we trust. Ask via WhatsApp when you commission a statement piece. We do not take referral fees.
