Resist-dye · Gujarat craft compared
Both crafts come from Kutch, Gujarat. Both use natural dyes and a resist-dye principle — areas of the fabric are protected before dyeing so they hold a second colour. They look nothing alike. Bandhani is thousands of tiny tie-dyed dots, festive and bridal. Ajrakh is geometric block-printed resist in indigo and madder, deeply gendered traditionally male but increasingly cut for womenswear. We work with Kutch artisans on both.

Tied-and-dyed silk or cotton with thousands of pinprick dots.
An ancient Gujarati craft where fabric is pinched and tied with thread thousands of times before dyeing. When the ties are released, the protected pinpricks remain undyed, forming dotted motifs. A single bandhani odhni can carry 75,000+ ties, done by a single artisan over weeks. Festive colours dominate — saffron, pomegranate red, mustard yellow.

Block-printed indigo-and-madder geometric resist on cotton.
A 16-step block-printing process from Kutch using natural mineral and vegetable dyes — indigo, madder, iron, alum. Each block is hand-carved teak; each colour is printed and re-printed across the length of cloth. Traditionally a men's lungi craft, now adapted into womenswear stoles, kurtas, and panels. Geometric, restrained, instantly recognisable.

Which to pick — Ketaki's verdict
If the brief is festive and joyous — Navratri, a sangeet, a Diwali daytime — bandhani is the answer. The bright dot-fields are unmissable in photographs and the craft has bridal credibility in Gujarati, Marwari, and Sindhi families. If the brief is everyday-modern or contemporary indo-western — a workplace fit, a gallery dinner, a Saturday market — ajrakh has the upper hand. The geometric register reads as design-led, not heritage-led, even though the craft is older. Both deserve more room in the wardrobe than they get. Most Aratrikkaz customers find their way to bandhani first and ajrakh second; we have started recommending the reverse for clients whose closets already lean traditional.
